Fall 2011 already!

It might not even be summer yet but the fashion world likes to always be one step ahead. So designers have debuted their Fall 2011 looks. I didn't think I'd be interested in the '70's revival seen on the runways but I've jumped on the bandwagon. Here are some looks that caught my eye:
Balenciaga Pre-Fall
  Rag & Bone Fall 2011
  Jill Stuart
  Hermes
  Mary Katrantzou
 Jason Wu
 Anna Sui
 Valentino
 Beyond the Valley
 Proenza Schouler

Classics

I love the book covers Penguin Books have created for their Hardcover Classics. I would love to own the whole collection! This is such a neat way to give classic books a new life. And it's proof that simple design can be powerful.

The Lacuna

I recently finished the novel The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver and thought it was excellent. I've always been a big Kingsolver fan and this book was especially interesting because Frida Kahlo, and her husband Diego Rivera, play a huge part in the main character's life. Kingsolver wove true historical events into the story so it wasn't hard to imagine the headstrong, stubborn, talented woman that was Frida Kahlo.

On that note (even though it's a long ways off) I'm going to try to convince my boyfriend to dress as Diego Rivera, and I as Frida Kahlo for Halloween.

Color Junkie

I'll be the first to admit I'm a color junkie. My idea of a good time is hanging out on the Kuler website (http://kuler.adobe.com). Who would have thought something as scientific as a spectrum of light could cause such a love affair? Below are some recent photos that caught my eye because of the thoughtful use of color.

Artist that makes cool stuff: Pepa Prieto

Pepa Prieto is a current female artist from Spain, whose graphic images have caught my eye. I love when I find work by a female artist (represent!) that I really connect with. I admire Prieto's ability to create both abstract paintings, and commercial images, all while staying true to her aesthetic. Whether it's mixed media on wood, or a design for MTV, Prieto knows how to make some compelling art.

Spring is on its way!

Ads for Spring 2011!

Bill Cunningham

I will definitely be checking this out!

Greatest form of flattery?

All of the lights

Enter the void

How do you find inspiration and still keep your art all about your vision? People constantly compare and contrast different artists, claiming they "copy each other." Anybody have an opinion on the Lady Gaga/ Madonna debate? So what should we consider "copying" and what is being "inspired?" Take a look at Kanye West's video for his song "All of the Lights." I throughly enjoy the focus on typography in the beginning, but it looks familiar... Check out the opening credits for the 2009 movie "Enter the Void." So did Kanye take Gaspar Noe's opening credit idea and use it as inspiration to base his own art on? Or did he blatantly copy an original idea? And for another typography based music video from Kanye West, (though this one doesn't seem to directly reference anything), check out the classic "Good Life" video.
